Govt Unveils Plan for 100-Acre Mariculture Investment & Development Estate at Korangi Harbour

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to build a 100-acre Mariculture Investment and Development Estate (MIDE) at the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KoFHA).

Designed as an integrated hub, the proposed estate will consolidate marine farming, seed production, research, processing, and cold-chain logistics into a single state-of-the-art framework. Speaking at a project briefing, the minister highlighted that modernizing Pakistan’s marine ecosystem is vital for scaling high-value fisheries, driving exports, generating local employment, and strengthening the national blue economy.

Core Zoning Structure

According to the master concept plan, the 100-acre estate will be divided into four functional zones:

  • 30-Acre Mariculture Zone: Dedicated to ocean farming, aquaculture operations, and cultivating high-value species like fish, shrimp, oysters, mussels, and seaweed.
  • 20-Acre Hatchery Zone: Engineered to advance aquatic seed production and maintain genetic supply chains.
  • 20-Acre Aqua Research Park: Built for marine research, technical innovation, and professional workforce training.
  • 20-Acre Commercial District: Designed for commercial trade, processing plants, cold-chain storage, and hospitality services.

Modern Infrastructure & Smart Facilities

The National Deep Sea Fishing Harbour at KoFHA will serve as the institutional base for MIDE. Planned infrastructure investments include:

  • Energy & Water Systems: Dedicated power supply, renewable energy integration, water treatment facilities, and advanced wastewater management.
  • Logistics & Security: Internal road networks, smart estate management, ICT connectivity, and 24/7 surveillance systems.
  • Environmental Design: Integrated green belts and eco-friendly landscaping to maintain sustainable coastal development.
