Semiconductor giant Nvidia is reportedly in discussions with OpenAI to provide funding guarantees for a major data centre in Ohio.
The proposed $250 billion deal, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, would support the ChatGPT maker in leasing a 10-gigawatt facility that SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy is developing in Piketon, Ohio — about 68 miles (109 km) south of Columbus. The full project could exceed $500 billion in costs, including the chips that will fill the centre, and is expected to deliver up to 800 megawatts of power by 2028 — enough to supply roughly 640,000 homes.
Electricity for the site will come from a separate $33 billion US–Japan agreement covering a natural gas plant.
Nvidia’s $250 billion guarantee would cover the data-centre lease itself, but not the chips inside, which are valued at an additional $350 billion. The company, led by Jensen Huang, has indicated it is also in talks regarding those chip-related commitments.
